You could pick up your own heart beat, but it will be much slower than a baby's heartbeat....your heartbeat is between 60 and 100 beats per min. If you hear a heartbeat count it for 1 min and if it is between those two numbers it is yours. A normal heart rate that early is much higher....like up to the 170's. If you can't hear it that early I would just wait, like you said.
