Contrary to intuition the northern hemisphere is closer to the sun in the winter. But because of the earth's tilt on its axis (about 23 degrees) the northern hemisphere has less hours of daylight and so it is the cold season. SUmmer time is when the northern hemisphere is farthest from the sun but again the tilt of the earth dominates. Now the northern hemisphere has the most hours of daylight and so aculates more light and heat from the sun.
